Description and methods employed (what, how, where and when)[edit]

What[edit]

The last part of the COWS project is devoted to enhancing the demonstration aim of the project by:

  • running in "showcase mode"
    • facilitating the documentation of COWS model, collecting and organizing the experience and **knowledge stored during the implementation of the project;
    • allowing interested parties (professionals, utility managers, environmental scholars and activists, CSOs, etc.) to understand better how the COWS approach solved an environmental problem in Viareggio and how to replicate or transfer it;
  • opening to further improvements that require contributions from new partners, such as:
    • involvement of neighboring greenhouses for full heat exploitation;
    • collaboration with engineering teams for further fine-tuning of COWS pre-treatment and all the process blocks;
    • making COWS log data available to research centers that may use them as real world test-case corpora;
  • making COWS documentation available as learning material for environmental engineering students.

How/Methods[edit]

Operation in showcase mode is indispensable for each of these purposes, including the first, closely linked to the final edition of the "COWS model and process handbook", which is a fundamental product of the project, indispensable to ensure the long term maintenance of the plant and its evolution, both of which are important in a Life Cycle Assessment.

Managing the plant in show-case mode means mainly managing a non-standard operating mode, organizing the work so as to:

  • include in the plan of activities of the managerial personnel and operation some interaction with the experts who are preparing the documentation for the manual and COWS model;
  • prepare and manage procedures to permit specialists and other outside interlocutors to visit the plant during normal operations;
  • reserve part of the managers’ and technical personnel’s time for interaction with outside researchers and experts.

The temporary personnel will be assigned mainly to these duties (with a positive side-effect of facilitating visitability and professional training).

For the production of the COWS manual (which will describe both the model and the application guidelines, enriched with the documentation of the lessons learned) we will use the instrumentation for the sharing of knowledge and know-how prepared in Action A1 to update the state of the art in the preparatory actions.

The final documentation will be prepared using semantic-rich notations (e.g. ISO/IEC 13250:2003 Topic Maps, a standard for the representation and interchange of knowledge, with an emphasis on the findability of information).

Considering the rapid evolution of the methods and instruments for elicitation, treatment, annotation and retrieval of operating knowledge, it will be necessary to perform an updated review of this action.

Where[edit]

This action will mainly take place at COWS plant site in Viareggio.

Constraints and assumptions[edit]

  • Constraints
    • Operations need to have windows of interaction with observers and engineers working on documentation
    • Safety conditions must never be lowered to allow documentation and observation
  • Assumptions
    • It will be possible to observe all the important aspects of the process – even in detail – without interfering with regular operation of the installation
    • There is sufficient accumulated documentation to permit preparation of the manual during the period of this action
    • There are no extraordinary activities or events in the period
    • Most of the people who participated in the realization of the product are in service

      • for the creation of additional documentation;
    • D6 - COWS model and process handbook
  • creation of reports for further development of COWS’ efficiency and its improvement

Indicators of progress[edit]

  • Schedule and effort variance;
    • actual vs. planned start/duration of tasks (if buffer time reserved for contingency is to be used then remediation actions must be triggered);
    • actual vs. planned resource use (15% work overload and 5% budget variance are thresholds for triggering remediation actions)
