Viareggio is a city and Municipality located in northern Tuscany, Italy, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 64,000 it is the main centre of the northern Tuscan Riviera known as Versilia, and the second largest city within the Province of Lucca.
It is known as a seaside resort but it is also an active industrial and manufacturing centre; its shipbuilding industry has long been renowned around the world and its fishing and floricultural industries are still fundamental sectors to the city’s economy.
During the summer season the city double its population with great pressure on waste services. The Municipality of Viareggio owns a stake of Sea Ambiente SpA with which it works closely to find new solutions for waste management planning in order to improve the environmental sustainability of the area.
In relation with COWS project the Municipality of Viareggio represents a key stakeholder in that: any improvement in waste management efficiency will reflect on citizens; reducing the environmental impact and improving sustainability will contribute to better conditions for the future generations.
